Staying sober this festive season
If you're recovering from problem drinking, it can be especially difficult to stay sober at this time of year. Here are some tips from our lived experience practitioners, who have overcome their own challenges, to help take the pressure off during the party season.
If alcohol feels hard this Christmas, you’re not alone, and it’s okay to do what feels right for you.
- Plan ahead for social events and decide what feels manageable
- Know your triggers and be kind to yourself around stress or anxiety
- Bring or choose drinks you enjoy that don’t include alcohol
- Share your plans with trusted friends or family if it feels helpful
- Remember you don’t have to attend every event – and it’s okay to leave when you’re ready
- Focus on the positives, like clearer mornings, saving money, and finding joy in other things
- Stay connected with your support network or groups, in person or online, over the festive period.
